Weโre buzzing to have launched the Kensington Big Fleaโa fresh twist on vintage culture set amidst the stylish charm of Phillimore Walk. But as we unpack our trays of treasures, we canโt help but feel a tingle of dรฉjร vuโฆ because Kensington already has its own legendary flavour from the past: Hyper Hyper.
Back in the โ80s and โ90s, Kensington Market was the spot for subculture royaltyโpunks, goths, ravers, new romantics, body-art aficionados, and fashion risk-takers. Around 1983, Hyper Hyper emerged as the marketโs creative hub, spotlighting emerging designers like Pam Hogg, Leigh Bowery, Rachel Auburn and Fiona Cartledge. It was less a stall, more a cultural launchpad, bubbling with energy and raw style.
Much like Hyper Hyperโs freewheeling ethos, the Big Flea & Vintage Furniture Flea have curated vintage fashion, homeware, furniture, jewellery and moreโthinking outside the high-street box and celebrating those scrap-of-fabric, make-it-your-own moments. Our Phillimore Walk market mirrors that same bold, inclusive, creative spirit.
So while we might not have the original silver-foil ceilings or the same old walls, we do share the same core: a playground for curious souls, trendsetters, and treasure hunters alike.
Hyper Hyper may have closed its doors in 2000โฏ, but its legacy lives on. With Kensington Big Flea, weโre writing the next chapterโbringing back community, expression, and fresh takes on vintage culture in the heart of London.
