There seems to be a lot of pressure these days to create a home that looks like it's come straight from Instagram. The latest paint colour, the "must-have" sofa or the lamp that everyone suddenly seems to own. Before long, homes can start to feel more like showrooms than the places where real life happens.
I've never believed that's what makes a happy home. Trends come and go, but the things you truly love will still make you smile years from now. Your home should tell your story, not somebody else's. I set up the Vintage Furniture Flea in 2010 to make shopping for vintage homewares easy and accessible for everyone. I wanted to make 'mooching for vintage furniture' a national weekend habit!
Of course, it's worth thinking about whether something suits your space, but when it comes to your home, I think your heart should always have the final say. If something makes you happy every time you walk past it, you've definitely made the right decision.
That's one of the reasons I love flea markets so much. Unlike shopping online, where algorithms tell us what we should like, markets are full of surprises, sometimes you'll go home empty-handed, and sometimes you'll stumble across something you never knew you were looking for. That's the joy of the hunt.
The search creates an emotional connection that simply can't be replicated online. Every time you see it, you're reminded of where you found it, the trader you bought it from and the excitement of discovering something completely unexpected. Those memories quietly become part of the object itself.
After more than twenty years of buying, selling and curating vintage markets, I've realised that the happiest homes aren't the most expensive or the most fashionable. They're the ones that have been collected slowly, thoughtfully and with love.
So the next time you're shopping for your home, don't ask yourself whether it's on trend. Ask yourself one simple question:
Does it make my heart sing?
If the answer is yes, take it home. Chances are, you'll still love it long after this year's trends have been forgotten.
